Why is America a member of the world trade organization? It seems to me that big business selling our country down the river for a small profit. I read the headlines everyday and see recalls on Chinese products for bad quality or illegal business practices. (There even killing our dogs) what’s next poison baby food? The next headline reads 1 trillion in trade owed to china. Who elects these guys to office (Republican and Democrats) why do we let them stay there? Shouldn’t there be a term limit on congress? The president has 2 terms in a life time why not congress. I believe we need new people and fresh ideas. Fresh faces in congress should bring about new results. We keep up the statuesque I’m not sure how much of a country we are leaving to our children’s children. I’m not sure if this is a question or just a statement. You choose….

The World Trade Organization is the product of the latest round of the General Agreement on Trade and Tariff’s. The U.S. back in the 1940’s was one of the initiators of this agreement and has been a major player in each of the revisions since the initial agreement.
The reason that the U.S. pushed GATT in the first place was the belief that the old trade system was a significant cause of the Great Depression. Further, as the largest industrial country in the world, the leaders of the U.S. believed that a global system of high tariffs was more likely to hurt the U.S. then help the U.S.
While there are provisions of the WTO that should be changed, and the U.S. is no longer a primary exporter, many of the original reasons are the same. The U.S. still has lower tariffs than many other countries in the world. As such, since the U.S. has not been particularly interested in raising tariffs on imports, it has been seen as being in the U.S. interest to get other countries to agree to lower their tariffs. The main problem with the current agreement is a) getting other countries to actually stop unfair trade practices; b) getting more of the products that the U.S. is a primary exporter of covered by the agreement; and c) getting environmental and labor standards included in the agreement so that our current policies do not create such a competitive disadvantage.
Bottom line — The U.S. is probably better under the WTO system than it would be under the old anything goes trade war system, but it still needs improvements.
