Can one tell the difference between Japanese and Chinese by looks?

November 29th, 2009 | by admin |

Like eye positioning, face shape?

Japanese eyes tend to be a little more slanted than Chinese.
Japanese people tend to dress more fashionable and their faces are more pale.

Yes, I can do that, though sometimes I’m wrong, but most of the time I get it right.

no. you can only tell by their fashion/hairstyle/make-up.
if you made them both wear the same clothes, hair – they will look the same.

if you didnt already know – south chinese people can easily pass as japanese
whereas north chinese people can easily pass as koreans/north japanaese

eg these taiwanese posers (south chinese since most of them are descendants from Fujian) can pass as japanese due to their hairstyle, make up clothes etc http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3138/2559189256_52f4299877.jpg

to westerners, these chinese people probably look japanese…. since they associate ‘cool’ looking asians with japan. when really, japan was considered trendy about 10 years ago. the west is now only starting to see japan as trendy, but the west is always behind o trends….

Yes, it’s not too hard even for a foreigner who has lived in Asia to guess the nationality of most Asian people. But not always.
The hardest to guess are Laos and Cambodian, for me sometimes Korean and Japanese can look similar too. Japanese often have somewhat finer features and smaller frames than Chinese but I find (IMO) Chinese are the more handsome people. Often physical clues (body language) will divulge nationality between Chinese and Japanese.

Chinese and Japanese of the same skin colour and age group may look similar in many features; it`s more common to see Chinese standing with folded arms while Japanese tends to bow or nods more frequently .
