World-renowned scholars and artists from China and Thailand met to compare symbols in traditional and modern Fine Art, among them:

international scholar and author of over 25 books, including Goddess of a Thousand Faces, Dr. Ye Shuxian, Director of Comparative Literature at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences,
and art historian, Prof. Pan Yaochang of Shanghais University,
along with faculty members from Silapakorn University, Nakhon si thammarat College of Fine Arts, Prince of Songkla University, and representatives from Fine Art Magazine. The expert discussions were expected to illuminate Chinese influence on Thai Culture and society.
A digital Chinese-Thai art exhibition was open to the public. This first of its kind event was sponsored by the
Confucius Institute and Prince of Songkla University et, Faculty of International Studies Dean Supachai Sangpanya.
Dr.Yao Ximing Confucius Institute at et said that art helps people understand each other better :
Morgan Lake, a teacher at PSU and the main organizer of the seminar was very enthusiastic about the meeting of minds
Prof. Pan was happy to be in et:
There was plenty of so called Food for discussion
Apichai Piromrak, Vice Dean of Silapakorn University in Bangkok, joined the discussion talking about murals or paintings he made for a Buddhist temple in London, UK.
There were examples of both Thai art from temples and galleries together with
Chinese art and symbols especially iconic dragons which influence and transcend both countries
You can see many examples in et statues and art with Chinese images
There were also examples of several books on art from both countries, which the participants brought along
And will be useful for PSU students of both cultures, as PSU teaches Chinese and Thai to all nationalities.
This was a just a sample of the beauty of art inspiring further study of Chinese and Thai images. For more information contact morgan@phuket.psu.ac.th.

Wai Shui-kan (韋瑞群) spent the last 20 years mastering ‘bian lian’ (變臉), or face-changing, a 200-year-old Chinese art form that involves changing face masks with a sleight of hand. He was shot to fame on a Chinese TV show in 2007 where he changed 44 masks in 3 minutes, breaking a Guinness World Record.

Face-changing is still kept a well-hidden secret to outsiders although it’s centered around a trigger mechanism that enables the change. Wai explains it’s also about how well a practitioner combines technique, body movement and charisma in order to put on a good show.

In this video, we speak to ‘Master Wai’ about the art-form. Also, watch him do his sublime and quick face changes at a fundraising show for SCMP Home for Hopes.

At nearly 2 feet long, made of steel, this oriental dragon is great for yard decor, indoor statuary, garden decor, or indoor art sculptures. The name is Secretsoarer Fyrescale or also know as “the protector of gardens!”. With red textured powder coating, this Dragon Sculpture contains some very unique geometry, which is precision cut and welded to perfection. View at http://stores.ebay.com/Metal-Art-Manifestations.
Red Dragons – Due to the color’s red symbolic achievements, these dragons can vary. On one hand, the dragon can be passionate and drive for what he or she does. For instance, they may enjoy terrorizing small towns. On the other, they can be a fire-breathing menace that spew blood and hate around the world. Often, these dragons are known to have a bad temperament. Many dragons in mythology are red, and many of them that are in poems are red, too. Why? Red has conflicting symbolism: blood, fire, love, and passion. It is easier to put a face on a creature with one or more of these aspects, yes? Poetic compositions especially exaggerate red. For Eastern Dragons, Red is the color of chaotic storms. The Red dragons are a symbol of the West, and they cause storms when they fight in the night.
