I was inspired to make this video by a fellow named Pierre, who is a Kung Fu flick aficionado. This has some of the best fight scenes from some of the best martial arts movies. First, we go at a decent pace through blazing Kung Fu action. Then I kick it up a notch in this drop-kicking, hard-hitting Kung Fu extravaganza. It is 1940’s China, and gangs rule the city. The most notorious of them all is the axe gang, lead by the insane Brother Sum. A slum called Pig Sty Alley is the only area safe from the Axes because the people there are so poor. Soon, wannabe gangster Sing and his pal Bone attempt to extort money out of a barber and fail, drawing the real Axe Gang to Pig Sty. However, it turns out that there are several kung fu masters living in the slum, and soon the two sides are enemies. As the plot thickens, Sing must decide- should he become a mobster, or save the day?

Thirty years of reform and opening up brings to China as much prosperity as pollution resulted from industrial development. Industrial wastewater led to polluted river, allegedly the root cause of the drastic rise of cancer cases in Wuli Village. Wai Dongying, a barely educated villager, recorded the death cases one by one in her “Diary of Death”.

Zhang Changjian, a bare-foot doctor in Xiping, Fujian, witnessed the rising number of cancer patients in his village. As the regional officials turn a blind eye to the crisis, Zhang joined forces with more than 1,700 fellow villagers suing the chemical factory in their neighbourhood. Winning the case, Zhang found himself becoming a marked man…

The plight of the two “cancer villages” reveals the harm to the Chinese people brought by water pollution. China should have by now realised the price to pay for over development and that “good” is more important than “fast”.

On 11th October 2007, The Scholar Ship, a multi-country study abroad program based on a cruise ship arrived in Ecuador. As part of our academic program in the country, we set to discover and understand how children understand their concept of National Identity while gaining perspective of their lives, the challenges they face and how NPOs, NGOs and Government are helping shape the single most important natural resource of the nation: their Children.

Our journey took us to Guayaquil and Quito two very different cities that have each a different attributes that have created social tension in the country.

During the video we visit local schools, vaccination drives sponsored by UNICEF, and we are guests on location of PLAN & NACE, organizations that are empowering children reporters to produce, develop and deliver documentaries that are showcased through ECUAVISA, one of the major national TV/Media outlets.

Note: This video has been submitted to YouTube’s Project:Report Journalism competition.

It is our aim in this entry to open a window in Latin America and further understand our common challenges and our common humanity.
