Two Kinds of DJ Equipment Speakers

February 2nd, 2010 | by admin |

There are two basic designs of speakers, including those used by DJs. One is the active speaker and the other is the passive speaker.

An active speaker is also called and amplified speaker. Obviously, this design incorporates an amplifier into each speaker. Hence you need to feed both the audio signal and house current to each speaker. DJs often prefer this design because it eliminates the need for an external amplifier – one less piece of equipment to haul around.

Passive speakers contain no such amplifiers. You connect an amplified signal from your amp to each speaker.

Which style to choose? They can both work great. One thing you might want to do is consider the size of the rooms in which you will be performing and see which speakers are easiest to lug around. After all, you will be doing a lot of that!
